Appreciating Poetry
Part 1: The Basics
Form - the way a poem's words and lines are laid out on the page.
Stanzas - groups of lines (Lines may or may not be complete sentences and can vary in length)
Traditional (structured) form - follow fixed rules
Free Verse forms do not follow set rules
Speaker - the voice that talks to the reader (This may be the poet or a character created by the poet.)

Rhythm - the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in each line

Imagery and Figurative Language
Imagery - language appealing to the five senses
Figurative Language - using creative comparisons to help readers picture ordinary things in new ways

Personification - a description of an object, an animal, a place, or an idea as if it were human or had human qualities
