Elements of Plot:
Exposition: Introduces the setting and the characters. Sets up or hints at the conflict.
Rising Action: Shows how the conflict unfolds and becomes more complicated. Builds suspense.
Climax: Is the most exciting moment and the turning point. Often results in a change for the main character.
Falling Action: Eases suspense. Reveals how the main character begins to resolve the conflict.
Resolution: Ties up loose ends. Sometimes offers an unexpected twist before the story ends.

External Conflict:
is a struggle between a character and an outside force. This force might be another character, a group of characters, or nature.
Internal Conflict:
is a struggle within a character's mind. This kind of conflict happens when a character must deal with opposing thoughts or feelings.

Kinds of Conflict
1) Man vs. Man (physical) - The leading character struggles with his physical strength against other men, forces of nature, or animals.
2) Man vs. Circumstances (classical) - The leading character struggles against fate, or the circumstances of life facing him/her.
3) Man vs. Society (social) - The leading character struggles against ideas, practices, or customs of other people.
4) Man vs. Himself/Herself (psychological) - The leading character struggles with himself/herself; with his/her own soul, ideas of right or wrong, physical limitations, choices, etc.

"The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell
In this harrowing tale, hunter Sanger Rainsford becomes stranded on a remote island where he seeks help at the chateau of General Zaroff. Zaroff, also a hunter, seems cultured at first but then forces Rainsford to become his quarry in a hunt to the death. Zaroff seems destined to win, but Rainsford outwits Zaroff and kills him.
"The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe
This is a classic tale of revenge. Montresor, the narrator of this dark short story, tricks Fortunato into accompanying him to the burial vaults beneath his palace, where Montresor stores his wine. Once there, Montresor leads the inebriated Fortunato deep into the catacombs and then walls him up inside a crypt, leaving him there to die.

"The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry
This story recounts the sacrifices a young couple make for each other. Each sells a prized possession to buy the other a Christmas gift - but ironically, each sells the very thing that makes the other's gift special. Della sells her beautiful hair to buy a chain for Jim's combs for his wife's hair. When they exchange gifts, they discover the strength of their love.
"The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst
The narrator of the story recounts major events in the short life of Doodle, his disabled younger brother. To avoid being embarrassed by Doodle, he teaches Doodle to walk, but while he is leading him - sometimes heartlessly so - to further accomplishments, Doodle dies in a thunderstorm.

"The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant
Written in 1884, this story tells of a young woman's tragic pursuit of status. Madame Loisel, the wife of a clerk, borrows a diamond necklace to wear to an elegant party but then loses it. The Loisels replace the necklace, thus acquiring ten hard years of dept, only to learn later that the original necklace was fake.
"Pancakes" by Joan Bauer
"Pancakes" is Joan Bauer's comic account of a teenager's obsession with perfection. Jill is proud of having a system for everything and is critical of others' shortcomings. When she faces a mob of hungry customers as the sole waitress in a pancake restaurant, however, she is nearly overcome. At a critical moment, her ex-boyfriend and his parents arrive. Their offer of help teaches Jill a lesson about her priorities.
